This image of the shuttle’s belly was a tough one for me to get. Shooting directly up at my widest perspective and slow shutter speed made me dizzy. I almost fell down. It took me several tries to get a decent image with the shuttle balanced in the frame.

This image of the shuttle’s tail shows the nozzles of the 3 main engines used to get the shuttle into orbit and the smaller thrusters used to maneuver the shuttle.

Chills ran through my body … the theater screen lifted and Atlantis was directly in front of me. I cannot explain the sensation that passed though me as I saw the shuttle only a few feet away. No image can replicate what I saw or felt. Memories of working with NASA as a Boeing technical representative in Washington, DC during the Shuttle Program’s “hey days” ran through my mind. Memories of watching the Challenger launch along with my Boeing associates brought tears to my eyes. As I walked around Atlantis, my whole body was shaking. It was almost impossible to hold my camera up for a steady image. After about a half hour I had settled down enough to take a few images. I will add more images In future posts. Like I mentioned earlier, I will not be able to create the image in my mind or the feeling in my heart when I saw this beautiful Bird.

Circles

Here I was just trying to capture the repeating circles of the wheel tires and the post in addition to the repeating lines of the logs. Again I was thinking of B&W when I took this image. The mixture of green grass and brown leaves cluttered the color image and distracted from the wheels.

Visualizing Black & White

When I saw this fireplace, my mind went immediately to black and white. The shadows, bright highlights, and shapes captured my attention. As I view simple subjects, I am slowly becoming able to pick out the shapes and tones that make the subject interesting, at least to me.

Lone Tree

Looking back over some photographs taken this past summer on San Juan Island, WA, this image of a lone tree hanging on to a ledge above the water caught my eye. I recall taking this image and trying to get the ripples and the bright reflection of the sun to frame the tree. I spent about one half hour just moving around and trying different exposures and shutter speeds to get what I was looking for. When I reviewed the photographs last summer, I was disappointed with the color image. Today I worked with the subtle shadows and reflections to come up with this B&W version.

Sycamore

Looking up I saw the white bark of this old Sycamore standing out above the other trees against the bright blue mid-day sky. Great opportunity for a B&W conversion! On this day there was an image waiting at every turn. Next time I will take my telephoto lens to isolate some of the interesting details.

First Image

This was the first image I took on my Peace Valley winter walk. I turned a corner and there it was … a new fence covered with fresh snow. It said, “take me”. So I did. I just like fences and the new snow really dressed this on up.

A Path in the Woods – 2

This image is of the abstract path posted yesterday. On its own, the path was an interesting image. The sun broke through a gap in the trees at the visual end of the path creating a tunnel effect. I used NIK Silver Efex Pro to convert to Black and White, I then added Color Efex Pro’s “Darken/Lighten Center” to further accentuate the light coming through the end of the path.
