Taking Time to Look Back

‘Lovers”
Grounds for Sculpture, Hamilton, NJ

I was organizing some of my old photos and came across this image from the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey. It brought bank wonderful memories of a couple of the adventures we took when we lived back in the Philadelphia area. The Grounds for Sculpture is a fantastic park with sculptures ranging from fantasy to reality, from abstract to giant accurate images or real people, and everything in between. In the 17 years I lived in Pennsylvania, I only made it to the Grounds of Sculpture twice. Each time I visited, I vowed to come back again and again. We even bought annual passes two times. What a missed opportunity!

This abstract was one of my favorites of two lovers enjoying the presence of each other in a beautiful setting of nature. I will go back!!!

Patch of Spring

“Crocus Patch”
Heatherwood, Early Spring

In the fall of 2020 we planted our first batch (3000) of spring bulbs all around our garden. Now we have several patches of spring color popping up all over. Once they start emerging, I can hardly control myself from wanting to go out the first thing in the morning to see what new is happening in the garden.

We are getting ready to place our order for this fall.

Crisp Autumn Morning

Our “Indian Summer” ended yesterday. We received our first rain since May and the temperature dropped 20 degrees. But we still had a beautiful crisp autumn morning today. We had nice patches of clouds that made the sky interesting while still letting in the beautiful sun rays to brighten the landscape.

Now that the temperatures have fallen and approach freezing at night, we should start to see the colors change more rapidly. I will have to be on my toes every morning and try to create images that reflect the rapid change in color.

Let There Be Sunlight

“Sunshine in the Garden”
Heatherwood Autumn

When I need a little sunlight, all I have to do is walk out into the garden. These brilliant yellow rudbeckia stand out like a bright sun with its rays extending out giving light. Such highlights abound in our fall garden. But, as the days pass they will transition to their spent form for a winter display. Even in winter, their shapes provide interest and a wonderful resting place for beautiful frost and snow.

Summer is Passing By

“View From Rock Garden Path”
Heatherwood Summer

The summer is rapidly passing. June, July, and more than half of August have wizzed by. September is right around the corner. School starts in two weeks! The many 100 plus degree days have been hard on the garden. But it has also brought out brilliant colors.

We are very thankful to have an adequate water supply. We water in the evening to keep most of our trees, shrubs, and vegetation healthy. We have lost a plant or two when a dripper becomes plugged. But overall, the garden has survived very well. Our feeling go out to the many who live in areas of severe drought conditions through the West, the country, and around the world.

Heatherwood Japanese Garden Stroll #11

“Looking Back”
Heatherwood Japanese Garden

After reaching the hidden corner of the path, our stroller stops and looks back. They think, “What a relaxing place for a morning cup of coffee, afternoon glass of wine, or just a little retreat.”

They then turn and take one last glance at the pond and waterfall before heading on for their stroll.

Playtime

Sometimes it feels good to just step back and play a little. Looking at the image from my previous post, I thought that it would make an interesting painting. With a few minutes of play with Topaz’s Impression, I was able to create this Cezanne-style image.

I Love Our Birches

“White Birch in Snow”
Heatherwood, Winter

Our two groves of white birches are brilliant against the winter snow. Every time I go out to photograph, I seem to gravitate to these beautiful trees. They attract my eye through every season, through the day as it passes from dawn to dusk, and through various types of weather from mist to bright sunlight. Maybe, I should create a focused photo project just on these trees.
