Winter Color

Winter Color in First Snow
Heatherwood

We just returned from a two week break in Palm Desert where the temperatures were in the high 70’s and low 80’s. We were welcomed by a little snow fall. It was a great way to experience a quick change of seasons.

Heatherwood is created to have color throughout the four seasons. In this scene, the berries of a cranberry viburnum provide a bright orange. The leaves of a sawtooth oak create the bronze. A yellow twig dogwood contrasts with a blue spruce. Oak leaf hydrangeas add a little red to the scene. The beauty of our garden is a treat to return to, even in winter.

Sharing With Our Neighbor

Upper Grass Bed
Heatherwood Autumn

When I first moved in, this area was an ugly weed patch on the edge of my neighbor’s property. It is on a steep hill side and not visible from our neighbor’s upper yard. It was directly facing our upper lawn and was an eyesore. I asked if I could experiment a little with grasses and maintain the area. They gladly agreed. Now I have a colorful low maintenance planting bed that ties the neighbor’s yard to ours. And our neighbor has a colorful border of grasses that they do not have to maintain.

A Glimpse of Selah Ridge

Looking Through the Upper Garden

Several walkers pass by our garden on their daily walks. One of Heatherwood’s design objectives was to provide view windows through the garden up to the ridge above. This image is taken from the road through one of the windows into our upper garden. Frequently a walker will stop for a minute or two to take a peek.

Harbinger of Summer

Up Through the Garden to the Ridge
Heatherwood Late Spring

Bright blue skies, ground covers in bloom, yarrow ready to bloom … summer is right around the corner. Our Heatherwood garden is starting to burst out in bloom everywhere. Temperatures are in the 70’s approaching the 80’s. Summer seems to be coming a little early this year.

One of the driving factors when I purchased our Selah property was the surrounding ridge. It feels a little like we are in the center of a half circle amphitheater. Looking through the garden, the ridge stands above acting like a guardian. It is a wonderful backdrop leading up to the bright eastern Washington blue skies. As I gaze up at it, my mind wanders to contemplate the wonders of nature and what is good about the world around us.

Welcome to Paradise

Sunset over Anaeho’omalu Bay
Wiakoloa, Hawaii

We were gifted a beautiful sunset on our first evening of our 2024 Hawaiian vacation. It was like a movie, with a colada in our hands we toasted to a beautiful welcome to Hawaii. It was followed by a romantic dinner with a local musician playing near our table and the gentle tropical breeze flowing through the palm trees.

A Beautiful Early Winter Day

The Woodland on a Bright Winter Day
Heatherwood Early Winter

It is hard to believe that it is December 23, just two days before Christmas. Our early snowfall has vanished. Today was an absolutely gorgeous early winter day. The sky was blue. Warm winter sunshine spread across our Heatherwood garden. Even though I had a lot to do inside, I could not help myself from strolling around our little Eden with my camera.

Based on today’s beauty and looking ahead to the forecast, it does not look like we will have a white Christmas. Last year we were blessed with snow. This year we will be blessed with what ever nature will bring. We look forward to a beautiful day filled with family and friends as we reflect upon the wonder of Christmas.

An Eastern Washington Blue Sky Winter Day

Looking Up to Selah Ridge
Heatherwood, First Snow

We had our first snow of the season a couple of days ago. After the snow flurries stopped, the sky opened up to this beautiful blue sky. Off I went with my camera! The remaining late fall color created a nice contrast against the fresh snow. It will be several months before we will have a morning cup of coffee here in one of our little garden hideaways.

Disappointment Followed by “Ah Ha!”

Devil’s Tower
Devil’s Tower National Monument, Wyoming

On my recent trip to the Badlands, I took a several hour detour to see Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. I drove into the park and was disappointed when I encountered a stopped line of traffic. After what seemed to be an eternity, I slowly moved around a corner and saw a sign, “One Hour to Parking Lot”. I grumbled and turned around and started driving back to the park entrance. After a bit, I broke out into the open from the tree lined road. I looked up and saw this sight. Ah ha!!! It was worth the drive.

Blue Sky Day

Blue Sky Over Cherry Allee

Some days are stunning. Heatherwood and the surrounding hills were absolutely beautiful on this late afternoon. Colors just popped out, especially the golden browns of the ornamental grasses and the panicle hydrangeas. The blue skies said summer, the garden colors said fall. I just strolled through the garden absorbing the warm afternoon sun and the colors of autumn. It was a great day!

Abandoned

Old Homestead
South of Odessa, Eastern Washington

Roaming around back roads in eastern Washington, I discovered this old abandoned homestead house. At one time it was a quaint setting surrounded by trees. A curving path led up to the front door. What was once a front yard is now covered by tumbleweeds. I wonder how many families over the years resided here. How long has it been abandoned? Many such little pieces of history sprinkle the eastern Washington farm lands.
