More of Longwood’s Meadow

More wide angle practice.  My objective for this image was to capture the details of the near field grass as well as the background of the tree line and farm house.  I feel that the image would have been more interesting if I would have taken it from a slightly higher angle so I could have included some of the mid-ground.  I knew better!

Longwood Garden Meadow

During my walk in Longwood’s Meadow, I saw this single tree with the path curving around it.  The leading line and isolated tree caught my eye. The wide angle helped place the tree in perspective with the expansive meadow.  Again, my thoughts for the day were to work on wide angle perspectives and just enjoy the day.

A Fresh Start – Longwood Gardens Meadow

It has been several months since I have posted an image.  My focus has been in other directions other than photography.  Yesterday I woke up to a beautiful early autumn day.  I just felt like getting outside and “practicing” with my camera.  Since getting my Fuji, I have not taken the time to explore its capabilities.  Yesterday was a fresh start.  I traveled to Longwood Gardens to explore the revitalized Meadow Area.  Because of its expanse, I decided to practice using only my wide angle lens.  It was a “get out and explore day” as opposed to focusing on getting that great image.

During my visit, I ran across this guy who had a demo version of Canon’s new EOS 7D MarkII.  We started talking and I recognized him as George Lepp.  He is doing a workshop at Longwood on Saturday and Sunday.  It was a pleasure spending a few moments with him.

Look Up and Imagine

Over time, I have learned to frequently look up and see.  On a hot day walking along Lake Galena, I looked up and saw the bright sun shining through these maple leaves.  In the bright sun, the leaves looked pretty flat.  At the time I took this image, I thought about adding a texture.  So off I went looking for something interesting.  I found an old cherry tree covered with a thin green fungus.  The texture caught my eye.  I combined the two to come up with the above image.

For reference, the texture image is below.

Exercise in Color Composition

This image is an attempt to just work with color and composition.  The deep pink and the adjacent dark green provided a strong color contrast as did the bright yellow and the adjacent dark green.  The round clump of pink flowers in the upper right corner was balanced somewhat by the white flowers in the lower left corner.  The diagonal strips of yellow and green provided the center focus.

Walking around downtown Philly, I saw this old stately building with ordinate sculptures decorating the facade.  This image spans the main building entrance.  From my viewpoint the vertical lines were perspective distorted.  I took the opportunity to work with perspective warp in photoshop to clean up the distortion.  Below is the overall main entrance facade.

Lazy Day

140601_Lazy Day by 2013 Karl Graf. Fuji X-T1, XF18-55mm @ 53mm, f/8.0, 1/60 sec, IS0 800

Today was a beautiful late Spring day.  The temperature was 75 degrees.  People were out in droves in downtown Philly.  The lawns of Rittenhouse Square were covered with people laying in the shade enjoying the beautiful day.

I used NIK Color Efex Pro’s  Classic Soft Focus and Glamor Glow filters to create a slight soft dreamy look for the Lazy Day.

Last Day of May

Today is the last day of May.  It was a beautiful late Spring morning.  I could not help but to get up early and walk along Lake Galena in near by Peace Valley Park.  My eyes were not picking up interesting subjects.  I used a technique recommended to me by Tony Sweet to just start panning and shooting to get going.  I have learned to consistently fall back on this technique to get my “juices” flowing.  It was a nice morning.
