Patch of Spring

“Crocus Patch”
Heatherwood, Early Spring

In the fall of 2020 we planted our first batch (3000) of spring bulbs all around our garden. Now we have several patches of spring color popping up all over. Once they start emerging, I can hardly control myself from wanting to go out the first thing in the morning to see what new is happening in the garden.

We are getting ready to place our order for this fall.

Peeking Through

“Crocuses Viewed Through Chief Joseph”
Heatherwood Japanese Garden

I got up from my knees where I took the image on my last post, turned around, and saw this vignette. Looking through the bright yellow needles of our Chief Joseph lodgepole pine I caught a glimpse of white and purple crocuses. It was one more opportunity to create the feeling of a warm late winter day. Spring is coming!

There is so much to see and enjoy in our Heatherwood garden. The images in the last three posts are only 3-4 steps apart. All I have to do is open my eyes and wait for something interesting to come to me.

Spring Is Right Around the Corner

“Crocuses and Nandina”
Heatherwood Rock Garden

After a few days of warm late winter weather, crocuses start to pop up throughout Heatherwood like magic. Small groups of bulbs are scattered about the garden. Many were planted next to rocks and trees to provide little focused highlights. Others were planted in a random natural fashion. As we walk along the garden paths, their bright blooms contrast against the winter colors of evergreen plants and shrubs like the Gulf Stream Nandina above. Little patches of color are everywhere. This is their second year in the garden, and we have many, many more places to cover. We are already planning on adding many more bulbs this fall.

Shadows Beget Hope

“First Crocus”
Heatherwood Japanese Garden

After the shadow of record-setting freezing temperatures, our first crocuses start to emerge. They provide hope that spring is just around the corner. In a similar fashion, I contemplate and pray that our world’s humanity will overcome the shadow that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is causing.

Spring Is Coming

Purple & White Crocuses
Heatherwood

Tomorrow is the first day of spring. Signs of spring are popping up all over our Heatherwood garden. The first crocuses that bloomed were white, the second were purple, and now the third are our purple and white variety. Looking out over our garden I see little flashes of color around most of our rocks scattered around the landscape. These little “jewels” are a clear sign that spring is here!

Spring Jewels

Purple, white, and a flash of yellow
Spring up all about,
Warming the land and our hearts.
