Around the Corner

Japanese Garden Path
Heatherwood Autumn

Walking around the corner of Heatherwood’s Japanese garden path, I immediately am attracted to the fall color beauty of our variegated dogwood. I pause and enjoy the colors, shapes, and textures of the overall garden scene. The dogwood leaves and berries draw me in for a closer look.

Red berries pop out along the branches. Pink fall color takes over the leaf margins. It’s a pretty sight to see!

Morning sunshine flows through the Japanese maples and conifers along the garden path. The maples are beginning to transition to their bright fall color. The ground covers and green shrubs and conifers are holding on to their summer greens.

As I walk along the path I look side to side and enjoy the various plants up close. I look forward along the curving path and anticipate what is around the corner … next post.

Secret Path Entrance
Heatherwood Japanese Garden

Heatherwood has several paths that wind through the garden. Each curve introduces a sense of curiosity. Before exploring what is around the corner, I first stop and enjoy the scene of what is in front of me. Throughout the garden there are windows that guide a visitor’s view to another part of a garden to explore later. What I see through this window is a path that I may take tomorrow. But now, what is around the corner? The answer is … look back to my previous post.

Secret Garden Path

Garden Path
Heatherwood Spring

This curving path winds through the most mature part of Heatherwood. It is my first attempt at designing a Japanese-influenced garden. Initiated in 2017, the trees, shrubs, and understory plants now fill around the eastern side of our home. The shade of the house provides an environment for a shade-loving plants. I look forward to several such little sanctuaries throughout our garden as it matures. For now, it is our little secret place.

Lower Garden Path
Heatherwood Japanese Garden

Trees, shrubs, and ground covers frame the lower path of our Japanese garden area. I can hear water rushing, but there is no sign of it. What lurks around the corner of the path? Trees and carefully placed bends in the pathway obscure what is beyond.

The garden is filling in. It is hard to realize that only six years ago that this area was a grass lawn. ‘Visioneering’, imagination, design iterations, and some hard work formed the structure. Mother Nature did the rest!

Shades of Green

“Along the Garden Path”
Heatherwood Japanese Garden

Shades of green highlight Heatherwood’s Japanese influenced garden area. Hints of reds and oranges provide a touch of contrast. The garden path meanders through the plantings. A new perspective lies beyond every turn. Every day as I walk through it, I appreciate how thing the various plantings are progressing. I enjoy what is currently in place and imagine how it will be as it matures.

I continuously envision what needs to be removed, changed, and/or added to improve the area. Where do we need additional shade? Do I need to transplant a plant to make room for one that needs more space? Do I need something new to complement an existing plant or fill in a blank space? These are just a few of the questions that I ask as my eyes and mind gaze over the garden. Just yesterday, we removed a dead shrub and transplanted an existing shrub to make room for a new tree and fill in where I removed the dead one. Then we planted a new Japanese maple to anchor the side of the stream and provide a little vertical height to frame the view. Working in the garden is a continuous exercise of enjoying the moment and imagining what can be.
