Happy Easter

Daffodils in Bloom
Heatherwood Crabapple Grove

Today is a day to take the time to give thanks for the wonderful world that our Lord has given us. It is a special gift to be able to enjoy our families, friends, and the world surrounding us. We are grateful to be able to share this little part of our personal Eden with family members on this special day. Happy Easter!

Blooming Together

“Crabapple Grove”

Last year our crabapples bloomed one at a time in sequence. This year five of seven have bloomed together. The remaining two in addition to the original one that came with the house when we moved in should be blooming any day now.

Today we finished our first week of spring planting, hopefully we will be able to finish late next week. We have about 2500 plants to put into the ground. Most are small ground cover plants, but they still take a lot of time. We are also adding several small shrubs to fill in the mid-tier in our Japanese and woodland areas. We are not planning on any additional planting in the Crabapple Grove area. We still have to decide how we want to cover the area covered with daffodils once they have bloomed. This is a project for another day.

What?

“Daffies in Snow”

What is going on? A week ago it was beautiful spring weather. Spring buds were bursting open. This week it snowed. The snow melted, then it snowed again. It started to melt once more. Now the forecast is for more snow.

I think nature is trying to tell me that it is not time to plant yet. This crazy week has caused us to delay our spring planting for a week. It is hard to adjust the irrigation sprinkler system when the lines and drippers are covered with snow.

One more day and all the daffodils are in bloom. From the time that the first daffodils bloomed it only took four days for the whole daffodil drift to bloom. In the same time period several of the crabapples started to leaf out. Shortly they will start to bloom one by one.

Daffodils Day 3

“Daffies in Late Afternoon Sun”

Another day brings out more daffodil blooms. The field is now about 75% in bloom. One day makes a big difference.

Yesterday’s garden walk was in the late afternoon just before the sun dropped behind the western hills. The warm light was gorgeous as it spread across the garden onto the daffodils in the crabapple grove. It was a nice way to wrap-up a beautiful spring day!
